Obituary

Mrs. Rhonda Denise Brannon Scales, affectionately known as "Teddy" by her college classmates, departed this life on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Wake Forest Baptist Health surrounded by the love of her family and closest friends. She was born January 1, 1957 in W-S, NC and devoted her life to enriching the community through her endless outreach efforts.

She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, loving sister and aunt. Her wit, amazing sense of style, and confidence to be unique and different has inspired many.

Rhonda completed her elementary studies at St. Benedict the Moore Catholic School, graduating from Bishop McGinnis High School in 1975. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and WSSU pursuing a Journalism Degree. A voracious reader and lifetime student, Rhonda's career path led her to the Malloy/Joyner East Winston Branch Library, where as a Librarian she touched the lives of many within our community.

Rhonda's appreciation for all things creative and the heritage of our city was evident in many ways, but most notably, she was a founding member of the NC Black Repertory Company and she was a recognized 'storyteller' for the city, many years before it became vogue.

Surviving to celebrate and cherish her memories are a husband of 25 years, Darrel Scales; one son, Cory Robert Scales; stepchildren, Shimere and Darrel Murphy; parents, Joseph and Vonetta Brannon; one sister, Anita B. Phillips (Percy); one brother, Joseph Brannon Jr.; devoted nieces, Jade and Shelby Phillips, Dataja Brannon, and Asia Bradley; and a host of other aunts, uncles, and cousins. Rhonda will also be missed by special friends, Tramona McClain, Melanee Mills, Lynell Miller, and Yvette Miller.

The celebration of Rhonda's life will be held at 1pm Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church with Rev. George Banks officiating. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Wednesday at the Church.

The family extends their gratitude to the Malloy/Joyner East Winston Branch Library for their assistance during Rhonda's illness and the ICU staff at WFU Baptist Hospital for the excellent care and attention extended to Rhonda and her family.
