Phylicia Juneaice Rose Barr, of Garner, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 12, 1987, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Phylicia was the beloved daughter of Tangelia Hairston and Ray Rose and baby sister to Artez Rose. Phylicia was a member of her home church, Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Walkertown, NC, under the leadership of the late Reverend I.L. Anthony, where she remained until adulthood. It was there that she was introduced to Christ and became a believer.
Phylicia graduated from Carver High School in 2005 and went on to attend North Carolina State University, where she majored in Psychology. It was during her time at North Carolina State that Phylicia began her journey with StepUp Ministry, as an intern in the Children's Program. Her passion, dedication, and heart for service led her to rise through the ranks, ultimately serving as the Youth and Young Adult Academy Director. In 2018, Phylicia stepped into her creative calling by launching her own photography business, Phylicia Barr Photography. Through her lens, she captured more than just images, she told stories, preserved memories, and celebrated love in all its forms.
Phylicia was the cherished wife of DeMarquil "Marq" Barr, her high school sweetheart, best friend, business partner, and the love of her life. Phylicia met Marq in 2003 and they were married on April 8, 2016. Together, they welcomed three sons, Mekhi Ray, Mason Lee, and Myles Ellis. They built a life filled with laughter, purpose, and deep, abiding love. She consistently spoke with admiration and gratitude for Marq in how he showed up as a man, husband and father in leading with strength, making her laugh and treating her like a queen.
Mekhi, Mason, and Myles were Phylicia's whole heart and entire world. She found joy in showing up for her babies, whether it was serving as the class mom, attending all of their games, or making holidays and birthdays magical. She was intentional, thoughtful, and joyful in her motherhood. She loved her boys with all of her and she made sure they knew that everyday.
Phylicia had a deep love and appreciation for her family. She adored her mother, father, and brother. Her connection to family ran deep, and she saw no distinction between her family and Marq's—they were all hers. She embraced them all, Phylicia made it a priority to show up, to support, and to simply be present. She treasured every gathering, every laugh, and every opportunity to love on her people—especially her beloved Meme who held a very special place in her heart.
Not only was Phylicia loving and caring to her own children, but to every child who crossed her path. Her nieces, nephews, cousins, and even the children of her friends knew her as a safe place, a loving voice, and a second mom. Her spirit was gentle and kind, and her presence brought instant comfort to all.
Phylicia had a special way of making everyone feel seen, celebrated, and loved. Her laugh was infectious, her smile lit up every room, and she knew how to bring people together—whether for a quick laugh, a long talk, or a good time. She loved traveling and exploring new places with Marq, but also had a gift for making people feel at home wherever she was.
There simply aren't enough words in the English language to fully capture what Phylicia meant to those who knew and loved her. To know her was to experience warmth, joy, and unconditional love and a heart full of grace. Of all the roles she embraced in life, wife and mother were her greatest joys and the ones she wore most proudly.
Though her time here was shorter than we ever hoped, Phylicia's legacy is overflowing. It lives on in her children, in the way Marq loves them, in the friendships she nurtured, and in the countless lives she touched simply by being herself.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Billy & Mary Hairston; paternal grandparents, Artes Lee Rose & Raynelle Gather Eccles; uncle, Donnie Murray; and a host of great-aunts and great-uncles.
