Percy Lee Adams, Sr. was born March 7, 1937 unto Walter Adams, Sr. and Annie Adams (Johnson) in Greenwood, MS. He attended the Sidon Industrial Academy school during his early elementary years. In his teen years, Percy started working in the fields to help his family before leaving Mississippi on what he called an "Ice Potato" truck and relocating to New Brunswick, NJ in 1957.
Percy was introduced to a beautiful woman, Mamie Louella Moses (Adams) in 1962 whom he dated for two years, before marrying the love of his life on his birthday March 7, 1964. Percy and Mamie went on to have 6 children together. Percy and Mamie remained married for 55 years until she was called home on May 20, 2019.
Percy began working for Landers Ford in the tire department upon arriving to New Brunswick, NJ and continued there until joining the Ford Motor Company. Percy worked on the assembly line at Ford Motor company for nearly 5 years.
He began his permanent career with the High-Grade Beverage Company of Monmouth Junction, NJ as a Truck Driver in 1974. Percy was a dedicated and committed employee to High Grade Beverage Company for over 20 years and retired in 1996.
Percy was very passionate about the game of Baseball & Softball. During his many years in New Brunswick he played baseball for the Sunbeam Superior Elks Club 215 as their first baseman. Percy became the head coach of the men's baseball team when they acquired new sponsorship with McHughes "Deluxe" Grill in New Brunswick through the early 1980's. Percy was later approached about starting a women's softball team for the Elks Club so, he decided to hang up his glove and become head coach of the women's team. After several years the club gained a new sponsor with Bernies Filling Station and his women's softball team Bernie's Allstars garnered two championships under the guidance and leadership of Coach Percy Adams. Percy coached the women's softball team for over 15 years and continued to remain very close to the members of his team.
Percy and Mamie migrated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1997 to help care for their grandchildren. While in North Carolina, Percy worked for a few companies after retiring from High Grade Beverage. His favorite job was working at the local Walmart putting bikes together in the bicycle department. Percy was in his element, he had his own private corner space at Walmart and those bikes were assembled to perfection. Percy truly enjoyed assembling bikes and that started with all the bikes he had to put together for his children, nieces and nephews back in New Jersey.
Percy was preceded in death by his dedicated and loving wife Mamie Louella Adams (Moses); his sister, Magelene Keys (Johnson); and granddaughter, Candress Funderburk-Adams.
