Our beloved mother and grandmother, Peggy Ann Spencer, 71, died Thursday, February 3, 2011. Born July 29, 1939, she was raised in the "little red flat-topped house "on West 12 ½ and Trade streets, (a.k.a. The Pond) built by her mother, Mamie Lee Wilson (1985). She was a lifelong member of New Bethel Baptist Church. She retired from Southern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T) as an information operator after over 28 years of service starting in New York then ending in the Winston-Salem office. Like her father, David Burnette (1988) who was a lifelong cook at NC Baptist Hospital, Peggy was also well known for her love of baking cakes and cooking especially for her family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. Use of this natural talent coupled with a strength inherited from her mother, Peggy was the "glue" that held our family together in both good times and bad for which we are all truly grateful .Although we miss her dearly, we have been blessed through the gifts of many loving family traditions received from her mother then to Peggy. Those left behind intend to faithfully continue these wonderful traditions in her loving absence.
Along with both parents, Peggy was predeceased by her first spouse, Gilbert Claude Dobson, (2007) of Philadelphia; her second spouse, Richard Lee Spencer who passed in 1984 was her lifelong soul mate and companion. He was also a true father to each of us. In 1979, she was also predeceased by her 21 year old daughter, Tina Gail Dobson due to Leukemia; and son, Richard "Punchie" Campbell (1996).
She is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Dobson-Powell of Winston-Salem, NC and her most dedicated helpmate, Robin D. Macklin (Jack) of Kernersville, NC; two sons, Mandell R. Dobson, Sr. of Charlotte, NC and Jerry "Tom" (Patricia) Dobson of Albany, GA; 9 grandchildren, Kadetta "Kay" Miller (Sterling) of Kernersville, NC, Mandell, Jr. (Nilaja) and Matthew Reynard Dobson both of Charlotte, NC, Gerrie "Pinkie" Dobson of Arizona, Jerrecho and Iitichia Dobson of Georgia, Brittany Moore of Fayetteville, NC whom also was a dedicated helpmate, Richard Campbell (Marie) and Spencer Campbell of Winston-Salem, NC; 8 great-grandchildren (ages 11years thru 11months); a brother, Jackie Burnett; niece, Debra Chenault; much loved daughters-in-law, Betty "BJ" Jeffers, Mary Crosby Dobson, Cheryl Love, and Gwendolyn Dobson; life-long friends, Joyce Hicks, Coleman Little, the Retired Ladies Birthday Club of Southern Belle, and her very favorite longtime Doctor James Dilley; her caring neighbors, and many many friends.,
Memorial services will be held at 12:30 pm Monday, February 7, 2011 at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1016 N. Trade Street with Reverend Dr. Kendall D. Jones officiating. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:30pm on Monday at the Church. Private burial services will take place at a later time for family and friends in Evergreen Cemetery.
