Obituary

Peggy Mozelle Brown Martin was called home on March 11, 2014 at the Bermuda Commons Nursing and Rehab Center in Advance, NC. She was born March 13, 1927 to Thomas and Guytanna Brown in Wilkesboro, NC. Her parents and siblings, Dorothy, Thomas, Jr., and Rufus have all preceded her in death.

In 1949 she married the love of her life, Everett Lee Martin, whom also preceded her in death. Two children were born of this union, Robyn Martin-Roseborough (Reginal) and Everett Leon Martin.

She graduated from Lincoln Heights High School in Wilkesboro, NC in 1944. After high school she enrolled at Winston-Salem Teachers College (WSSU) where she received a B.S. degree in Education in 1948. Peggy continued pursuing higher education, and she went on to earn two masters degrees: one from the University of Connecticut (Education) and the other from UNC-G (Speech Pathology).

While at WSSU she was active in the drama club. She was also a charter member of the Omega Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. at WSSU in 1948. She later became a member of the Rho Zeta graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. here in Winston-Salem. She held several offices.

After graduating from WSSU, Peggy began her teaching career in Wrightsville, GA. She eventually moved back to Winston-Salem and in 1950 she started her career with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. She taught for forty years, including schools in Georgia and Winston-Salem, NC. As an educator she was both a classroom teacher and a speech therapist. Her influence as a teacher and speech therapist was a major contribution to a vast number of students. In 1991 she retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System.

Peggy has been a member of several organizations. Some of the organizations she belonged to include the Retired Teachers Association, Sigma Shadows, pinochle clubs, and the WSSU Alumni Association.

In addition to her children, she is survived by her grandchildren, Dr. Qia S. Martin and Everett Jamaal Martin; three in-laws, Jerry E. Martin (Sadie), Claudette Kelly, and John E. Martin (Peggy); she also leaves several cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends to cherish her beautiful memory.
