Peggy Ann Hairston Conrad, a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, was born in Winston-Salem on December 17, 1934. She departed this earthly life peacefully at her home Saturday morning, September 15, 2007.
She graduated from Atkins High School in 1952 and attended A&T State University in Greensboro, NC. Peggy was a cook for many years at The Childrens' Home and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and retired from Integon Insurance Company. For the past few years she has been the primary caregiver to her husband David
She became a member of New Bethel Baptist Church at a very young age, where she was a member for more than 50 years, earning her a position as a Gold Star member. At New Bethel, she served in several auxiliaries including the Spiritual Choir, the Missionary Department, Sunday school and others.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Hairston; her brother, Anthony Hairston; her sister Kennetta Thompson; her daughter Debbie Conrad Funderburk; two brothers-in-law, Leonard Conrad and Emmanuel Conrad; and a sister-in-law, Jean Conrad.
Peggy leaves behind to carry on her legacy of love a loving husband of 53 years, David Lester Conrad Sr. of the home; four children, Renee Conrad of High Point, NC, David Conrad Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Kristy (James) Franklin Jr. and Latrice (Antonio) Benjamin both of Winston-Salem, NC; seven grandchildren, Lokia Conrad, Tavia Benjamin, Antonio Benjamin, Nia Franklin, Bailey Franklin, James Franklin III, Lindsay Conrad and Virginia Conrad; two sisters, Sadie (Lester) Hairston and Andrea Hairston; seven sisters-in-law, Barbara Hairston, Florence Conrad, Betty Wilkes, Jackie (Willis) Penn, Elizabeth Frazier, Shirley Conrad and Faye Conrad; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 pm Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at New Bethel Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from Noon until 12:30 pm on Wednesday at the Church and at all other times at the home of Mrs. Conrad at 104 Cassell Street, Winston-Salem, NC.
