Obituary

Mrs. Pearlie Mae Humphrey of 123 Northwoods Circle, Winston-Salem, NC , was born in Onslow County, Jacksonville, NC, daughter of Mrs. Lucy Brown Pollock and Mr. Henry P. Pollock, of Jacksonville, NC.

She was married to Rev. Benjamin F. Humphrey, Jr. for 68 years and nine months.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Marlene Letitia Humphrey.

Mrs. Pearlie Humphrey was First Lady to Pastor Benjamin Humphrey in the African Methodist Episcopal Church for 54 years. She was a songstress with a golden voice. She attended schools in Jacksonville, NC, Newburgh, NY, and McDowell Tech College where she was licensed as a L.P.N. She worked in Broughton Hospital in Morganton, NC. She was charge nurse in a facility in Winston-Salem, NC. She was an assistant teacher in Nash/Rocky Mount School system and retired in 1996.  She was a precious jewel in the life of the church and one who served in many capacities.

Left to cherish her memories are: her husband, Reverend Benjamin F. Humphrey, Jr., retired Pastor/ Super Annuate of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; sons, Bennie Byron Humphrey (Betty), Minister Marcus Humphrey (Mary), Pastor Broderick G. Humphrey (Marie); 1 sister, Mrs. Ruby Phillips; nine grandchildren, Bennie, Jr., Kesia, Broderick, II, Karin, Jessica, Eli, Joshua, Andrea and Isaac; 17 great grandchildren; one precious sister, Mrs. Ruby Phillips; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Irene Harrison of Richlands, NC, Ms. Betty G. Humphrey of Richlands, NC, and Mrs. Darlene Batts of Hampstead, NC; two brothers-in-law, Gordon A. Humphrey (Geraldine) of Kernersville, NC and Elbert E. Humphrey (Melinda) of San Antonio, TX; and a  host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

She heard a voice we did not hear which said you must not stay, she saw a hand, we could not see which beckoned her away.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Thursday, June 18, 2020 at Russell Funeral Home.

Private funeral services will be held Friday, June 19, 2020. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
