Obituary

Ms. Patricia Darlene Mumford went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2018 peacefully in her home.

She was born on September 25, 1945 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to the late Willie James and Edna Lee Mumford.  She graduated from Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and continued her studies at Winston-Salem State University.  She worked for Experiment in Self Reliance (ESR) where she initially served as Outreach Specialist after being promoted to the Housing Services Manager.   Through her work at ESR she was a beacon of hope in the community working to eliminate poverty and homelessness and helping others to become self-sufficient.  Her motto was to treat everyone with dignity, respect and sincerity. She retired after over forty years of service.  For her service to the community she received the Humanitarian Award from the Effort Club of New Bethel Baptist Church, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Winston-Salem Chronicle, and the United Way Employee of the Year Award.

She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church where she faithfully served on the Effort Club, Hannah Missionary Group, Mass Choir, Willing Workers, Forsyth County Missionary and the Transportation Ministry.  Her pastor was Rev. Dr. Kendall Jones, Sr.  She was also a member of the Unconditional Love Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie James and Edna Lee Mumford; her grandparents, Edna Taylor and Robert Lee Cowan, Dossie and Annie Mumford; and her sister, Shirley Mumford Watkins.

She leaves to cherish her memories two children, Kevin (Michelle) Mumford of Greensboro, North Carolina and Christopher Mumford of the city; four grandchildren, Kayla Mumford of Greensboro, North Carolina, Shomari Morrison of the city, Christian Mumford of the city, and Kyndal Mumford of Greensboro, North Carolina; four sisters, Willie Kay Hawkins, Sandra Carter, Irene Weaks, and Amanda (James) Bowman all of the city, other siblings Braddy Jones, Jr. of High Point, North Carolina, Gerald V. Jones of San Francisco, California, Bryon G. Jones of Richmond, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, January 4, 2019 at New Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Kendall Jones, Sr. officiating.  Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.  The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1:00pm on Saturday at the Church.
