Mr. Oscar Hines, 83, was born on May 16, 1933 to Sue Avery and Wilson Hines in Fayetteville NC. Mr. Hines was called home, to dwell with our heavenly Father on May 14, 2017. He met the love of his life at Antioch Baptist church in 1953, and would later marry Betty Jean Brown in 1957. Mr. Hines graduated from Atkins High School in 1952, were he played varsity football. He attended Winston Salem State University and was avid supporter of his beloved Rams for many years. He joined the US Air Force and served one overseas tour earning the National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals. Mr. Hines was later honorably discharged in 1957.
Upon returning to his home town, he earned certificates of training in Welding and Graphic Arts-Printing from Forsyth Technical Institute. His career work was focused in R.J. Reynolds at the Whitaker Park, where he enjoyed employment for more than 36 years. As a past member of the Prince Hall Masons in his early years, he later joined Camel City Elk Lodge #1021, where he received membership in Enloe's Past Presidents' Council. His community service included participation in the lodge's relief to and participation in community service events. As a key member in the organization, he provided leadership and guidance to the members. He made Antioch Baptist Church his spiritual home and was a member for more than 40 years. Mr. Hines enjoyed the friendship of countless members of the community and was loved by all. His family centered attitude was inspirational and left an indelible mark on those that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Sue Avery Hines; daughters, Daphne Hines, Vickie Cummings, and Maryann Rhodes; and his five brothers, Willie, Ernest, Louis, Clifton and Murray Hines.
Mr. Hines is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty; sons; Oscar Jr. (Karen) and Sean Hines both of Winston Salem; one sister, Shirley (Apostle Wallace) Gaither; six grandchildren, Okema, Brandon, Shawnta, Briana, Latrice and Daphne; close nephew, Willie Stevenson; five great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Dollie, Jarene, and Gwen; brother-in-law, Ransom (Nancy); and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Antioch Baptist Church, 5061 Lansing Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105 with Rev. Dr. Jimmy Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
