Osa Madeline Johnson was born July 7, 1937, to the late James Albert Johnson, Sr., and Nina Alice Green Johnson. She departed this earthy life on May 6, 2023. Osa was one of three children born and raised in Tobaccoville, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, James Albert Johnson, Jr. and James Allen Johnson.
Osa attended Carver High School in Winston-Salem, NC. She worked for the Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools cafeteria system, where she served as a cafeteria manager of several summer school programs. Osa was the primary baker at Moore Elementary School and Paisley Middle School in Winston Salem, NC, before she retired on disability due to her declining health. The children knew that if they didn't have lunch money, Ms. Johnson would help them.
Osa was a faithful and active member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church in Winston Salem. Osa served as the coordinator of the Annual Holiday Food Charity Drive for many years, and she was a faithful and active member of the Altar Guild and St. Monica's Guild until her health declined. Although she could not attend church in person for many years, Osa enjoyed watching mass on EWTN television and receiving communion from her daughter. She loved gardening and took pride in her yard.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Nina M. Johnson, Syveria A. Hauser, and Bryan C. Johnson (Christy); one granddaughter, Christina Johnson; a devoted cousin, Ruth Payne Gary, whom she called her "sister." Osa also leaves to mourn her passing her "daughters adopted in love," Jeanette "Penny" Taylor, Kathy Boston and grandchildren, Vaidra Boston Johnson (Jermaine), great grands, Mason Johnson and Chauncey Boston; and a host of additional relatives and friends.
Funeral mass will be held at 11:30am Friday, May 12, 2023 at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 11:30am on Friday at the Church.
