Obituary

Ms. Olivia LaVerne Campbell Swinton passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011 at her home. A native of Winston-Salem, Ms. Swinton was born to James and Dardenella Campbell on December 28, 1940. She graduated from Carver High School and obtained a BA degree in Biology Education from Virginia Union University and a MS degree in Reading from George Washington University.
She taught elementary, middle, and junior high school science and reading for 30 years retiring from the Washington, DC public school system. After returning to Winston-Salem, she worked for Cancer Services, Inc. as a Volunteer Coordinator. Ms. Swinton pledged the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at Virginia Union University and was an active member of the Winston-Salem Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was a member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Las Amigas, Inc., Friends of Carver School Road Library Board of Directors, and numerous other organizations. Ms. Swinton was a faithful member of Union Chapel Baptist Church and served as a member of the Trustee Board.
Ms. Swinton is survived by a daughter, Anne S. Bennett of Raleigh, NC; one brother, Eugene M. Campbell (Gladys) of Winston-Salem, NC; two sisters, Deena C. McIntosh (Thurman) and Anita C. Parker both of Greenville, NC; one granddaughter, Regina Phillips; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Olivia was a loving, thoughtful, and caring person that will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Union Chapel Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Tuesday at the Church. The Omega Omega service will be held from 11:45am until 12noon on Tuesday at the Church.
