Obituary

Nina Bailey Steele, 92 was born October 6, 1916, in Walnut Cove, NC. She passed away July 13, 2009. She was the last of the 14 children of William H. Bailey and Emma Turner Bailey. After graduating from Walnut Cove Elementary School and Atkins High School, Mrs. Steele lived in Winston-Salem, NC for most of her adult life. She graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers College, now Winston-Salem State University, in 1941 with a degree in Elementary Education. She received her Masters' Degree in Rural Education from NC A&T State University in 1951. She taught for 38 years in the Stokes County School system, fulfilling her mission for educating the children, who like herself, grew up in the rural farming communities that surrounded Winston-Salem. She was most proud of the many years she spent as a teacher and the eight years she spent as Principal of Pinnacle Elementary School, in Pinnacle, NC. She also taught at London Elementary in Walnut Cove, NC and King Elementary at King, NC, where she taught in the special program for gifted and talented students. She was a member of Wentz Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ for more than 50 years, and served her church in various capacities in the Sunday school and on the Deaconess Board.
In addition to her parents, her husband of 47 years, E. LeRoy Steele, preceded her in death in 1989.
She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Dr. Eleanor Steele Kay; a son-in-law, Mr. Leon D. Kay; and a grandson, Byron J. Stewart; she also leaves a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved immensely and to whom she was very dedicated.
Funeral services will be held at 12Noon Saturday, July 18, 2009 from the Wentz Memorial Congregational UCC, 3435 Carver Road, Winston-Salem, NC. Interment will follow in the Baileytown Cemetery, Walnut Cove, NC. The family visitation will be held from 11am until Noon on Saturday at the Church.
