Obituary

Deacon Nathaniel Dewitt McCullough of the Northwood Estates Community was born September 21, 1937 to the late Bishop William O., Sr. and the late Mrs. Alice Caesar McCullough where he grew up in his father's church, Mount Calvary Holiness Church.

"Mac" or "Nate", as he was affectionately known, was a dad figure to all that met him, including the children in the Northwood Estates Community.  If anyone was acting out of line, they would swiftly be called a "Cotton Pickin Mamma Tamma" and they would know they needed to change their behavior immediately.

Deacon McCullough departed his life unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 27, 2021.

Deacon McCullough retired from Roadway Express with over 30 years of service where he called himself the hardest working man at the terminal.  He started working for the Winston-Salem Journal first by dropping papers off at different locations, then as a hawker coordinator where he placed men and women at different street locations.  He loved them with all his heart, and he would bring them on Tuesday mornings to church at 6:00am.  At first, they grumbled, then they saw he was not giving up on them.  He told them "You're going to get a word from God," and eventually they got used to it and looked forward to coming.  That was his ministry.

Deacon McCullough made many friends in his lifetime including his Army buddies, a social club-The Cyclops, and The Rollers that attended all the WSSU games in and out of town.  He loved the Rams- "you hear that Aggies."

He graduated from Atkins High School and attended 3 years at WSSU before he was drafted into the Army at Ft. Jackson, SC.  There he met the love of his life, his queen, Andrena McCullough. He always showed and let her know how much he loved her.  It was a true example to all that witnessed their union.  He loved her with all his heart.

Deacon McCullough was preceded in death by his grandson, Alexis Deron McCullough.

Surviving Deacon McCullough is his love who held his hands until she could no longer, Andrena Boyd McCullough; his precious children, Nathaniel D. (Julie) McCullough, Jr. of Kernersville, NC, Christopher (Toni) McCullough of Lexington, NC, Kia M. (Kevin) Williams of Durham, NC, and Bryan S. (J) McCullough, Sr. of Wilmington, DE; nine grandchildren, Jarell, Kevin, Kedron, Derez, Jordan, Bryan, Jr., Korey, Andreas, and his only granddaughter, Brianna; thirteen great-grandchildren; special friend to the family, Maxine Cain; his siblings, Reverend Dr. William O. (Mildred) McCullough, Alfonza (Celestine) McCullough, Ruby Turner, and Reverend Leon (Reverend Delores) McCullough; and a host of family and friends especially his church family which includes the Marriage Ministry.
