Obituary

Naomi Bradley McGriff was born on Thursday, October 31, 1929 to the parents of Henry and Florence Bradley in Winston Salem, NC.

She loved her family dearly, and was an advocate for the welfare of children. She did not believe in wasting food. She was often found donating food from work to children in the neighborhood. This led to many disagreements with her boss, Mr. Irvin, who turned the blind eye and allowed her to carry on.  She spent many summers traveling with her family, and exploring the wonders of the world.

On March 14, 1945, she found and married the love of her life, Mr. Hazel W. McGriff of 59 years.  Together, they loved and nurtured five children, LaSandrell Pegues, Othniel (Sandra) McGriff, Dyna McGriff, Zyro (Josephine) McGriff, and Travis McGriff Sr. She was later blessed with the joy of nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She wanted nothing more than for them to "Love one another", as she often reminded them.

She was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1947. Following graduation, she began work at Winston Leaf Tobacco Company. She also worked for Bahnson Electric Company, Friendship Baptist Church Daycare, and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. As an employee of WS/FCS, her ambition and passion for children became evident.  During this time, she also received perfect attendance in 1992. She was strong in her faith and a devoted member of Hanes C.M.E. Church for 34 years. Until the decline of her health, she serviced on the Missionary Board, Women's Choir, and The Creative Club.  She loved hearing God's word through song. Her favorite hymnal was "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross".

She was preceded in death by her mother, Florence Ruth Bradley; father, Henry Bradley; and siblings, Fulton Bradley, Laddie Bradley, Katherine Simpson, and Annie Pearl Burvick.

She has one surviving sister, Alice Williams of Dallas, TX; devoted sister-in-law, Mrs. Jean Bradley of Shaker Heights, OH; she also leaves behind a host of friends, support staff, and various communities of involvement. She will be missed for her warm smile, moments of honesty, and her loyalty.

As she fought through her extended period of illness, she ascended to God's Heaven Choir on June 19, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center. So today, we celebrate her life and legacy of love. We take solace in knowing she has no more pain and suffering. We anticipate the day we will be able to see her smiling face again.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Hanes Memorial CME Church with Rev. Clarence Cox, III officiating.  The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
