Obituary

Naomi Vashti Fitch Christian departed this life on Saturday, March 12, 2016 after 94 rich and wonderful years!

Naomi 's circle of life began with her birth in Winston Salem, NC to Robert and Nevada Fitch in 1921, the second of three girls, Ruth Fitch Boone the eldest daughter and Jacqueline Fitch Matherson the youngest. She attended the local elementary and high schools.

She completed college, at the former "TC" now Winston Salem State University and became an elementary school teacher. Seeking better opportunities, she moved to Washington, DC after her marriage to James T. Christian. A sincerely dedicated and committed educator, Naomi influenced the lives of thousands of children during her 40+ years in the education field as a teacher and a counselor.

With a very wry and sharp wit, Naomi knew exactly who she was and always spoke the truth no matter the results. She made those who came in contact with her laugh, think and sometimes even annoyed. But always in a caring manner and generously giving of her time and expertise to set the record straight. She was a very active member in her church, St. Benedict the Moor, participating on many counsels and boards helping to guide the flock in religious teachings and trainings. And of course in her prime she was a mean card player, participating in bridge tournaments, pinochle and occasionally bid whist.

Naomi Christian is survived by her loving daughter, Natalie McIver and her son-in-law, Michael McIver; her sister, Jacqueline Matherson and her two sons and Naomi's nephews, Herman Matherson, Jr. and John Matherson; one grandson, Navy Comdr. James McIver and his wife, Francesca McIver and their two sons and Naomi's great-grandsons, Christian and Jackson McIver; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Naomi's circle of life is now complete. While we may mourn her passing we are joyful that she is now where she is meant to be.

A funeral mass will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, March 19, 2016 at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church with Father Basil Sede presiding. Inurnment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
