Mrs. Myrtle LaVerne Harper Jones, 92, of 3180 Woodfin Place passed away Sunday, October 12, 2008 at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born to James and Corrie S. Harper on May 19, 1916.
She was educated in the Winston-Salem public schools and graduated from Atkins High School. She also completed LaMae Beauty College in Salem, NC.
She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. A member of the Deaconess Board, Miriam Missionary Group, and a former Sunday school teacher. Employed as a school guard at Carver Crest Elementary School, a beautician later retired from Alcatel/Lucent after more than 20 years of service.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, seven brothers, and a grandson.
Survivors are her husband of 74 years, Alonzo Jones; a daughter, Doris (Dwight) Cardwell; sons, Frederick (Carline) Jones and Ronald R. Jones; nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one great, great grandson, four nieces, three nephews, and a host of friends and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Reverend Serenus Churn, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be held from 11:30 am until 12 noon Thursday at the church.
