Obituary

Myrtle LeEsther Dillard Curry was born March 18,1925 in Bristow, Oklahoma to the late Terry and Daisy Dillard.  She took her flight peacefully to glory at her home on Thursday July 02, 2020.

Mrs. Curry later moved from Oklahoma to Stockton California where she met and married her late husband John Amos Curry Sr. After marrying John, they moved to Winston-Salem North Carolina, where she joined the fellowship with St. Phillips Moravian Church.

Mrs. Curry furthered her education by attending La Mae Beauty School and operated a home beauty salon called the "Beauty Nook." She later attended Forsyth Technical Institute for Practical Nursing, where she began her career at Amos Cottage and Kate Bitting Hospitals here in Winston-Salem N.C.  Mrs. Curry later moved to Long Beach, New York in 1966.  She was employed by Long Island Tides Nursing Home and Lawrence Nursing Care Center until her retirement.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John Amos Curry Sr.; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Hall; and her brother, Bishop Robert D. Hall Sr.

Myrtle leaves to cherish her memories, her children Cynthia L. Smith of San Antonio, Texas, Carolyn F. Curry of Long Beach, New York, Daisy C. Teemer (Roger) of Hempstead, New York, Constance D. Curry of Roosevelt, New York, John A. Curry Jr. of Long Beach New York, Cessil G. Curry of Winston-Salem, N.C. Cilistine E. Douglas of the home; Seventeen grandchildren; Thirty-Six great grands; sixteen great-great grands; one great, great-great grandchild.  A host nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She lived her life endlessly and fulfilled by never meeting someone she called a stranger and always striving to educate herself. She also served as the President of Carver Crest Elementary PTA for many years.  She serviced her community by participating in the Order of the Eastern Stars and the Red Hat Society of Winston-Salem. Her hobbies were sewing, ceramics, cooking, canning food, crocheting, gardening and reading the word of God.  Until the time of her death she remained in the fellowship with St. Phillips Moravian Church where she was recognized as being the oldest living Black Moravian, where she was inducted in 2019 into the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture Center in Washington D.C.

Private funeral services will be held  Saturday, July 11, 2020. Interment will follow in Salem Moravian God's Acre Cemetery.
