Obituary

Montie Christian McRae Neblett was born on October 16, 1928 to the late James Jay Little and Tennie Mae McRae in Wadesboro, North Carolina. With the help of "Big Momma", she was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Rueben Alexander Watson. She departed this life on February 7, 2022, at the home of her daughter Emma Rickard in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

She was educated in the Anson County school system and graduated from the Anson County Training School in 1946. After graduating high school, she moved to Harlem, New York and stayed with her aunt, Juriel McRae Springer who had migrated earlier. Montie worked for several small manufacturing firms and faithfully sent money home to help with her family's expenses. Once she was settled, she assisted her sisters Vernetta, Kay, and Alice in their migration to New York City.

Montie always sought to improve herself, so she obtained her Certified Nurse Assistant certification from City University in New York. After completing her certification, she worked as a CNA for Seniors and an Au Pair for young children.  She is fondly remembered by many of the families, and one continued to stay in touch with her until the end.

She married William Suggs in 1950, resulting in the birth of their daughter, Adrienne Suggs. She was a devoted mother to all of her "girls", Emma, Adrienne, and Phyllis and she enjoyed being a stepmom to Helen after marrying her father, Hugo Neblett in 1966. Hugo and Montie lived in various Brooklyn, New York neighborhoods until they retired to The Villages in Lady Lake Florida in 1986.

Montie was an accomplished quilter, (a McRae family tradition), and loved doing word find puzzles.  She loved to tease her grandchildren and enjoyed their company very much.  She was a good singer and would breakout into her favorite hymns on occasion. She always said that she was very proud of her children and grandchildren and wanted them to strive to be their best.

Montie was raised with a love of the Lord and was a member of the Chapel of Christian Faith in Lady Lake Florida where she served on the Choir and Usher Board.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Tennie Mae Watson; stepfather, Ruben Watson; birth father, James Jay Little; husband, Hugo Neblett; brother, Clarence Watson (Louise); sister, Flonnie Watson; and great-great-granddaughter, Nyell Edwards.

She leaves behind her sisters, Mae Vernetta Mungin, Rubye Jean Staton, Alice Agers (Henry), and Kay Moorer (James); special cousin, Bernetta Mitchell; her daughters, Emma Rickard, Adrienne Suggs, Phyllis Johnson (Earl), and Helen Garside (Paul); her grandchildren, Erica Grampus, Eric Grampus (Crystal), Leah Royster, William Royster, Xavier Johnson, Imani Johnson, and Millie Garside; her great-grandchildren, Raquan Edwards, Rashida Edwards, Derik Grampus, Emory Hoskins, Tyrin Edwards, Trevor Edwards, Tarek Edwards, and Enysha Grampus; her great-great-grandchildren, Issa Edwards and Kinsley Edwards; many nieces and nephews; and a loving group of family and friends. She also leaves a special CNA, Natasha Wright who was devoted to her to the very end.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Friday, February 11, 2022 at Russell Funeral Home.  Private services will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022. Interment will be held at a later date in Florida.
