Obituary

Mimi Delores Johnson Dennis was born on August 24, 1934 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Theodore and Willie Mae Johnson.  She was the oldest of three children. She departed this earthly life on May 31, 2022.

She attended St. Anne's Academy Catholic High School (Winston-Salem). After graduation, she received a scholarship to Newton College Sacred Heart (present day- Boston College) in Boston, MA. She transferred to North Carolina Central University and graduated in 1956 where she received a degree in Library Science.  She did further studies at UNC-Greensboro.

Mimi was married to the late Richard Earvin Dennis and from this union, Martino W. Dennis was born.

Mimi's work career as a librarian started in Appomattox (VA) Public Schools. Thereafter, she worked primarily as a librarian in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools until her retirement.  During her tenure she worked at Cook Elementary School, West Forsyth Senior High School, and Paisley High School.

Throughout her life, Mimi was a Pinochle card player and avid traveler.  She loved to read the newspaper thoroughly everyday.  She was an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She had a passion for helping others and also volunteered at Samaritan Ministries.

She was a devoted member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an Adult Sunday School teacher and a member of various church organizations for over 60 years. She was appointed as a Deacon in June 1998 by Dr. Douglas E. Summers.  She was a lead bell ringer at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Earvin Dennis; her parents, Theodore and Willie Mae Johnson; her brother, Joseph Johnson, Sr.; and her special dear friend, Joyce Ann Gerald.

Her life and memory will be cherished by her son, Martino W. Dennis; daughter-in-law, Patrice R. Dennis; grandson, Martino Richard Dennis; sister, Shelly J. Banks; sister-in-law, Esther Johnson; nieces, Marquita Lee and Nadia Johnson; nephew, Joseph Johnson, Jr. (Madra); great-nephews, Khalil King and Jonah Johnson; great-nieces, Mackenzie Johnson and Savannah Johnson; her "special nieces" Priscilla Gerald Henderson and Gwen Turner were dear to her heart.

Mimi Dennis left a legacy of love, caring, and generosity.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony will be held at 11:00am Monday, June 6, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Monday, June 6, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.  The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Monday at the Chapel.
