WINSTON-SALEM - Mildred Dean Goodwin, 83, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Springwood Care Center. She was born in Winston-Salem and then the family later moved to Laurens, SC where she graduated from Sanders High School and The Philadelphia School of Nursing in Philadelphia, PA. She started her nursing career at Kate Bitting Hospital and retired from Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Goodwin was an active founding Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop #685 (now Boy Scout Troop #685). Mrs. Goodwin was a faithful member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and served on the Deaconess Board and was a Sunday School Teacher until her health began to fail. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Robert H. Goodwin. She is survived by a daughter, Mamie G. Douglas of Winston-Salem; a son, Reginald (Cassandra) Goodwin; two grandchildren, Robin and Jonathan Goodwin all of Cedar Park, TX; sons adopted in love, Milton (Rhonda) Murray and Dwayne (Sandra) Hughes of Winston-Salem; two brothers, James Dean of Atlanta, GA and Jack (Lillie) Lovelist of Laurens, SC; two sisters-in-law, Sarah G. Addison and Hattie Mae Holmes of Columbia, SC; special friends, Deacon William "Fred" (Jeanette) Hyman and Deacon Calvin (Musette) Nesbit; a host of nieces, nephews, close and distant friends. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, May 12, 2009 from the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Dr. Nathan E. Scovens officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:30 am until 12 noon on Tuesday at the Church.
