Obituary

God in His infinite wisdom and power called Mildred Fields to make a transition from this earthly home to His heavenly kingdom early Monday morning, January 12, 2009 in Winston-Salem, NC.

She was born on November 7, 1929 and attended the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Public Schools. She had worked for Export Leaf Tobacco as a Forklift driver.

She was a member of New Unity Missionary Baptist Church and was involved in various areas of the church working with the Senior Choir, Missionaries, and the Building Fund.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Charlie Fields; her mother, Mary James; her father, Frank James; and two brothers, William and Sam James.

Mildred leaves to cherish her memories and legacy her son, Van Tyrone James of the home; two step-daughters, Mamie Blakney and Delores Gilliam of the city; two step-sons, Charlie and Tony Brown; two sisters, Carolyn Lewis and Connie James of the city; one brother, Frank James, Jr.; a special grandchild, Nekisha (Michael) James out of five grandchildren all of the city; several nieces and nephews and cousins; a devoted sister-in-law, Jossie James; a daughter-in-law, Ethel Brown; four special friends, Eleanor Shell (Bootney), Shirley Armstrong, Beverly Simmons, and Elma Penn; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm Saturday, January 17, 2009 from the New Unity Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Thombs officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 1pm until 2pm on Saturday at the Church.
