Michael Norman Wright passed away on Monday, March 19, 2007 at Forsyth Medical Center after being seriously ill for a week. He was born on November 14, 1943 to James N. Wright, Sr. and Elizabeth M. Wright in Winston-Salem, NC.
He was a 1962 graduate of Atkins High School and attended WSSU for 3 years, where he discovered his talent for singing. He studied with and was coached by Dr. James Dillard.
Michael became a soloist and participated with many different choirs and ensembles in concerts, weddings, and special events in the southeast and throughout Europe and Africa. He also performed in theatre arts with the Black Repertory Theatre in Winston-Salem.
Michael was a life-long member of Dreamland Park Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir. He was also a member of the Twin City Choristers for 20 years where he sang baritone and was a soloist. He worked as a counselor throughout his adult life in Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem.
Michael was immensely talented as a singer, actor, and orator who was also kind, humble, and a supportive friend to so many people.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He leaves to mourn his mother, Elizabeth M. Wright of Salisbury, NC; a son, C. Michael Thompson of Newberry, SC; three brothers, James N. "DELL" (Linda) Wright, Jr. and Kenneth Wright of Winston-Salem, and John A. (Hyacinth) Martin of New Haven, CT; two sisters, Kay W. (Bryant) Norman of Salisbury, NC and Nancy W. Green of Winston-Salem, NC; granddaughters, Niayana and Brayana Thompson of Newberry, SC; "UNCLE MACKIE" of "MACKIE NONKA" leaves 13 nieces and nephews and 21 great nieces and nephews to cherish wonderful kit-flying memories and fun; as well as a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at 12 NOON from the Red Bank Baptist Church with Reverend Ronald Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held on Friday, March 23, 2007 from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
