Michael Clay Carter began his journey in life in Winston-Salem, N.C. on July 13, 1966, born to Smith C. and Gertrude Carter. He departed this life Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Center. Preceding his transition were his father, Smith C. Carter, Sr., his grandmother Lenoir J. Carter, and his aunt Juanita C. Carter.
Michael attended the local school system in Winston-Salem, graduating from East Forsyth High School in 1984. He immediately enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and received training in Parris Island, South Carolina. Michael was able to serve in Guam and California as part of his tour of duty.
Later, after entering civilian life, Michael became a cook by trade; working for the Marriott Hotel, Winston-Salem State University and Shuckers Seafood.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his mother; Gertrude (Papa Sam); sister, Kim. L. Carter; brothers; Kenneth L., Smith C., Steven A. and Matthew B. Carter; God-sister, Linda Moses; aunts, Helen J. Benbow, Wilhemenia (Willie) Pledger, Millicent, Joan, Jasmine, Jacqueline, Pamela, Carlene, Williette and Lenoir Carter, all of the city, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family visitation will be held from 1pm until 1:30pm on Saturday at the Church.
