Merle Herbert Wylie "Poppy", the eldest son born to Frank and Rubia Wylie on February 24, 1925, passed this life at 10:30am Sunday, November 21, 2010.
He was the loving husband of Delores Eskew Wylie and the beloved father of Muriel LaTanya Wylie and step-father and mentor to Michael Smith and Olufemi Elom.
For Merle family came first, leaving no doubt that he loved his sisters, Jean, Yvonne, better known as Bonnie (who passed away) and Brother Sydney (Verna) dearly. The loss of his younger sister Bonnie just days before his homegoing was a time of deep sorrow, but his recall of their time together as children and young adults remained with him always. He never failed to smile when speaking with his grandsons, Michael and Marcus and recalling their times together. In addition to his broad smile, his great-granddaughter, Aisha and great-grandson, Jameel could bring a glow to his heart and their spirit and love for him always renewed his spirit. His nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews were never left out of his conversations and he took pride in all of their accomplishments.
Merle would often boast of the many first in his life. He was the first African-American quarterback for his high school and the first to try out in this capacity for Ohio State University. Before entering West Virginia State, Merle served honorably in the Navy during World War II. He belonged to several community service organizations including the Kappa Alpha Psi, the Brotherhood of Masons, and the Goler Metropolitan Methodist Church. He retired from the United States Postal Service after more than twenty years.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church. The family visitation will be held from 1pm until 2pm on Saturday at the Church.
