Obituary

Melvin Wesley Neal was born on October 19, 1921 in Winston-Salem, NC. He departed this life on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 after a brief illness. He was the sixth of seven children born to Jefferson and Bertha Neal.

He graduated with honors from Atkins High School in 1938 at which time he entered military service. A World War II veteran, Melvin served in the European Theater of Operations, as the company's Chemical Warfare Specialist, and the Media Specialist. He received The American Service Medal, The Good Conduct Medal, The World War II Victory Medal, 2 African Middle Eastern Service Medals, and 2 Battle Stars.

After completing military service with an honorable discharge, Melvin graduated cum laude from West Virginia State College with a bachelor degree and received his master degree from Columbia University in New York City.

He was first employed by the Department of Welfare, in New York City, then as a Probation Officer in the Domestic Relations Court, also in the city. He was hired as a Special Education Teacher at Yonkers High School in Yonkers, New York where he served for twenty-five years until retiring in 1984.

While in New York, he was a faithful member of Trinity Methodist Church in White Plains, New York where he served as a Sunday school Teacher, Superintendent, and Senior High Youth Fellowship advisor. Upon his return to Winston-Salem, NC he became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Melvin was married for forty-nine years to Joyce Denley Neal and they had one daughter, Janet.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce; his parents; and all of his siblings.

Melvin leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter, Janet Neal Atkinson and his very devoted son-in-law, Alvin L. Atkinson; his grandchildren, AJ and Jennifer Atkinson who were his pride and joy; sisters-in-law, Elaine Neal of Washington, DC, Mattie Neal of Winston-Salem, NC, Edith Denley of San Antonio, TX and Alberta Denley of Mount Vernon, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30am Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 11:30am on Saturday at the Church.
