Melvin Woodruff Gabriel, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on July 26, 1949, Melvin lived a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to his family and friends.
Melvin was the beloved husband of the late Audrey Terri Gabriel, with whom he shared many wonderful years. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sylvester Gabriel, Sr. and Katherine Adams Gabriel; his son, Steven "Stevie" Harvey; and his brothers, Arthur Lee Williams and Bernard Adams. Melvin now joins them in Heaven, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
He is survived by his devoted sons, Leonard Denard Gabriel and James Gabriel; his grandchildren, Chloe and Quiana Jones, brought him immense joy and pride; Melvin's great-grandchildren, Bryant "Deuce" Gaddy II, Carter Henry, Kaison Watlington, and Jaxon Watlington, were a constant source of happiness, and he adored spending time with them. Melvin is also survived by his loving siblings, each of whom held a special place in his heart, James Sylvester Gabriel, Jr., Willie Gabriel of Pfafftown, NC, Tyrone Gabriel of Garland, TX, and Kathy Farrish (Herbert) of Raleigh, NC. Their bonds remained strong throughout his life, providing him with unwavering support and love.
Educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Melvin graduated from Atkins High School, where he forged lasting friendships and developed a strong foundation for his future. He went on to work for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, where he dedicated many years of hard work and commitment before retiring. Melvin was highly respected by his colleagues and left a lasting impact on all who worked with him.
Melvin was known for his vibrant personality and his great sense of humor. An avid golfer in his younger years, he spent countless hours on the golf course, enjoying the game and the camaraderie it brought. His passion for golf was matched only by his loyalty to the UNC Tarheels, and he could often be found cheering for his favorite team with boundless enthusiasm.
Melvin's ability to bring joy and laughter to those around him was one of his most endearing qualities. His sharp wit and infectious laughter brightened the lives of his family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished forever. He was a master jokester, always ready with a funny story or a clever remark, and his sense of humor was a constant source of joy for those who knew him.
In addition to his love for family, golf, and the Tarheels, Melvin was a man of strong principles and deep compassion. He touched the lives of many with his kindness and generosity, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication to family will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we remember Melvin Woodruff Gabriel, we celebrate a life well-lived, and a man deeply loved. His memory will be cherished, and his spirit will live on in the laughter, love, and stories shared by those who knew him. Though his departure leaves a void that can never be filled, his legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
