Ms. Mattie Williams went to her heavenly home early Sunday morning, September 14, 2008. Ms. Williams was residing at Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Sumter, SC on July 22, 1921. She lived in Brooklyn, NY for most of her adult life. She moved to Winston-Salem in 1994 and joined Hanes Memorial CME Church.
In New York, Ms. Williams was Vice-President of the Senior Usher Board and the advisor for the Junior Ushers at Newman Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a member of Newman for over 50 years.
Ms. Williams was a garment inspector for many years in New York.
She is survived by her sister, Carrie W. Parker of Winston-Salem, NC; three step-sisters, Dorothy (Albert) Cully of Dover, DE, Rose (Tucker) Rose of South Orange, NJ, and Thomasina Lurke of Sumter, SC; two sisters-in-law, Lucy Williams of Hempstead, NY and Alice Wells of Sumter, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Thursday, September 18, 2008 from the Hanes Memorial CME Church with Reverend Clarence W. Cox, III officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1pm on Thursday at the Church.
