Mr. Matthew Nathaniel White, Sr. was the sixth child born to the union of Reverend Robert Embre, Sr. and Olivet Evelyn White. He was born with his twin brother, Mark on September 23, 1940.
Matthew graduated from Vineland High School in 1959 where he was a four sport athlete earning varsity letters in both football and wrestling. He attended the prestigious New York University on a full scholarship. After completing studies, he went on to coach high school, college, and AAU wrestling while working full-time for the New Jersey State Department of Transportation.
Matthew also worked as a dealer in Atlantic City Casinos where he was commended for excellence, receiving an official citation from The Claridge Casino. He then retired and relocated to Winston-Salem, NC to care for his baby sister, Barbara.
His spirit departed this Earth on Friday, January 15, 2010 at the age of 69.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents; sister, Wilhelmae Johnson; and his brother, Robert Lee.
He leaves to cherish his memories one son, Matthew, Jr.; three grandchildren, Isaiah, Tamasia, and Marquis; five brothers, Clinton (Antonia), Samuel, Morris, Sr., Mark (Jamesetta) and Robert, Jr. (Joyce); three sisters, Gladys Howell, Olivet K. and Barbara McFadden; fourteen nieces; fourteen nephews; twenty-two great-nieces; thirty-two great-nephews; five great-great-nieces; seven great-great-nephews; cousins numbering way too many to count; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A family visitation will be held from 6pm until 8pm Thursday, January 21, 2010 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at Noon Saturday, January 23, 2010 at St. James AME Church in Mays Landing, NJ. Burial will follow in Lincoln Cemetery, Mays Landing, NJ.
