Mrs. Mary Ruth Miller Greene of Walkertown, NC passed away on August 12, 2008 at her residence. Mrs. Greene was born July 24, 1922 in Forsyth County to Elijah and Maude Miller, Sr. Mrs. Greene graduated with honors from Atkins High School in 1938 and proceeded on to North Carolina College and graduated with a Bachelor in Accounting in 1942. In 1959 she became the first black female President of Safe Bus Company and she served the Safe Bus Company and the WSTA From 1942-1987. She is honored in the African-American Museum of History in Raleigh, NC and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Elijah Miller, Jr. and her only daughter, Mari Devonne Greene Gill.
She is survived by her husband, James C. Greene, Sr. of 38 years; two sons, Frederick T. Greene of Winston-Salem, NC and Reginald W. Burns of San Francisco, CA; three step children, LaVerne Freeman, Dianne Jackson and James C. Greene, Jr. all of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Andrea M. Gill, Cedric E. (Vickie) Gill, Jr., Mary L. Greene, and Jacquelyn R. (Dexter) Lowe; six great-grandchildren, Jessica T. Gill, Kaleb, Kareem, and Keyaira Sharp, Darian J. Lowe, and Alana M. Gill; favorite cousins, Verna Martin, Pauline Hauser and Dianne Russell-Murphy; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30am Saturday, August 16, 2008 from the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Miller Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 10am until 10:30am on Saturday at the Chapel.
