Many defining moments tell the life story of Dr. Mary S. Isom, who was born February 26, 1934 in Lavonia, GA to the late D.V. Reeder and Orene Reeder Scott. She later moved to Rome, GA with her sister, Sarah; mother; and step-father, Thomas Scott.
She met, fell in love, and married Odell C. Isom, who preceded her in death just five months ago. Dr. Isom peacefully transitioned from life to eternity on September 30, 2012 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice/Palliative Care Center after a brief period of illness.
Mary was a faithful member of St. John CME Church. Mary was a graduate of Winston-Salem Teachers College (School of Nursing) Class of 1957. She received her Masters from UNC-Chapel Hill, and her Doctorate of Education from Nova University. Dr. Isom was a retired employee of Winston-Salem State University having served the University as the Dean of the School of Nursing for many years. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a Charter member of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority.
She is survived by one daughter and caregiver, Shirley (Thurmond) Carter; son, Joseph (Glendora) Payne; sister-in-law, Julia Johnson; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30pm Friday, October 5, 2012 at St. John CME Church, 350 Northwest Crawford Place W-S, NC. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 12:30pm on Friday at the Church.
