Mrs. Mary Ellen Jones

July 27, 1935 – December 9, 2023

Mary Ellen Hairston Jones departed this life peacefully on December 9, 2023 at her home in Walkertown, NC.  She was born July 27, 1935 in Belews Creek, NC to the late William Hairston and Murphy Scales Hairston Jones.

In her early years, she was educated in public schools in Norfolk, VA and in Winston-Salem, NC.  She graduated from Paisley High School in Winston Salem, NC.

Mary worked in the Forsyth County Schools for several years.  She held several positions in industrial manufactures.  She also was a dedicated salesperson for Avon throughout the Triad area for 40 years or more, she was honored and awarded gifts and certificates several times for top salesperson.

Mary was a very special and loving mother, grandmother and sister.  She loved her family dearly.  She was always by their side to give them support, confidence and help.  She was a very compassionate person and never met a stranger.  She loved people and they loved her.  She also loved to play Scrabble with her scrabble partners on the third Tuesday of each month.

Mary was a member of New Beginning House of Worship in Walkertown, NC.  She also attended Rising Star Baptist Church in Walnut Cove, NC. She was a faithful server and genuinely loved the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one daughter; two grandsons; her sister; and two daughters-in-law.

Her loving memories will forever remain in the hearts of her three daughters, Cynthia (Perry) Worthy of Walkertown, NC, Brenda (Brian) Hairston of Kernersville, NC and Kenya Jones of Atlanta, GA; three sons, Dennis (Shirley) Jones of Walnut Cove, NC, Gordon Jones, Sr. of Winston-Salem, NC and Rev. Dr. Jesse D. Jones, Jr. of Walkertown, NC; a loving and devoted granddaughter, Tiffanie Jones of the home;  twenty-one grandchildren; forty-three great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Jones of Walkertown, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A public viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Friday, December 15, 2023 at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church with Rev. Dr. George C. Banks officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown, NC. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12:00noon on Friday at the Church.
