Obituary

Mrs. Mary Ethel Moore Brown, daughter of the late Reverend Clemmons Monroe Moore and Mary Eliza Banks Moore, was born in Iredell County on February 14, 1932.  She was married to Dr. John B. Brown, who survives.  She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Clarence, Clemmons, John Raymond, Lonnie, James Monroe, Sr., J.B., and Charlie.

Mary joined St. Peter Baptist Church in Statesville N.C, when she was 12 years old.  She was a member of Mt. Zion AME Church in Plainfield, N.J., where she served as President of the flower club.  She was currently a member of St. James AME Church in Winston Salem, N.C., where she served 16 years as president of the Women's Missionary Society.

Mary attended the Iredell County Schools and furthered her education by attending North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina.  In 1955 Mary married Dr. John B. Brown and moved to New York where she worked at the Federal Reserve Bank.  While working in the banking industry, her career evolved and she worked at 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza in New York City.  Mary went from the cotton fields of Iredell County to Wall Street and back to North Carolina.

Mary's most rewarding experience was serving dessert at the Soup Kitchen and making chocolate chip cookies at Hospice.  She loved the Winston-Salem Symphony and enjoyed the Sunday afternoon concerts until her health declined and she was unable to attend.

In addition to her husband, John, Mary leaves to cherish the memory of her life, a son, David (Leslie) Brown of Albany, New York; four grandchildren, Andrew, Brianna, Amar, and Ajoni, three brothers, Roy (JoAnn) Moore of Statesville, N.C., Daniel Moore of Harmony, N.C., and Robert (Genell) Moore of Charlotte, N.C.; five sisters, Alberta (John) Glenn of Charlotte, N.C., Mamie Feaster of Jamaica, N.Y., Mable Hall of San Antonio, TX., Margaret (Dannie) Reid of Statesville, N.C., Rosa (Leroy) Williams of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sisters-in-laws Margery McMannis of West Hampstead, N.Y and Geraldine Moore of Harmony, N.C; a loving "bonus" daughter, Sonia (Byron) Barbre, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
