Mrs. Mary Virginia Alford was one of 13 children and she was born on June 12, 1936 to the late Edward and Nellie Young. Mary was married to the late Johnny Alford and everyone called her "Aunt Sissy". Aunt Sissy was a life-long resident of the city of Winston-Salem, she attended Carver High School and she retired from the Piedmont Leaf Tobacco Company.
Aunt Sissy was a faithful member at St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Nurses Ministry, the Missionary Ministry, and she also served on the choir until she began to experience health challenges.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Josephine Thomas and Minnie Lucille Young both of Forsyth County, NC and Della Mae Thornton of Orange, NJ; seven brothers, John A. Conrad, Samuel R. Conrad, James A. Conrad, Albert B. Conrad, Walter L. Conrad, Edward A. Conrad, and Elijah Conrad all of Forsyth County, NC.
She leaves behind to cherish her happy memories two loving sisters, Mary Frances Flow and Lillian Howell of Winston-Salem, NC; a sister-in-law, Mae Frances Greene of New York City; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Monday, March 14, 2011 at St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend J.E. Cook officiating. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Monday at the Church.
