Marthola Grier Payne, 96, was born January 28, 1918 to the late Dock and Martha Jane Grier. She departed this life June 8, 2014 at Springwood Care Center.

Marthola attended the local public schools and later pursued a trade as a seamstress. She later became a Teacher's Aide at Skyland Elementary School.

Marthola was married to Robert A. Payne, who predeceased her; along with seven brothers and one sister.

Those embraced by her love in her later years, who now share precious memories of her wisdom and grace include her niece and caregiver for the past 17 years, Shirley Payne Carter (Thurmond) of Pfafftown, NC; her great-niece who also shared in her care, Shantha K. Hyman Caldwell (Jimmy); her Church Family; and a host of Payne and Grier nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Prince Raney Rivers officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Wednesday at the Church.
