Mrs. Martha Douglas Mayfield departed this life on January 8, 2025 at 5:30am at the Oaks at Forsyth. She was born in Iredell County, NC on April 20, 1930 to Willie Lee Douglas and Bessie C. Douglas.
Mrs. Mayfield was the youngest of 8 sisters and 4 brothers.
She received her education in the Iredell County Schools and attended Piney Grove Elementary School in Mocksville, NC. She later continued her education at Carver Consolidated High School in Winston-Salem, NC. Martha worked in manufacturing for many years.
She was married to Lawrence D. Mayfield who preceded her in death; and her youngest son, James Lamont Douglas also preceded her in death.
As a child she received spiritual training in Mocksville, NC. She later relocated to Shouse Temple and then St. Stephens in High Point, NC. Then she was a member of Assemblies of Christ, High Point, NC where she sang on the Choir, was the Mother of the Church, and a member of the Communion Committee. She attended church until her health failed her.
Mrs. Mayfield loved singing, and she sang with her family as they traveled around the state. They called themselves "The Douglas Sisters."
She loved her family very much and always enjoyed getting together for a cookout, fun and lots of laughter.
She leaves to cherish precious memories, her oldest son, Rev. Earnest Steven (Jacqueline) Douglas whom she loved dearly and wanted to talk to every day; her grandsons, Danté, and Lashawn of Tennessee, Maurice Douglas and Marcus (Nikki) Mayfield of Winston-Salem, NC. Special thanks to Steven Jessup for being there to help her; nephews, Sterling Spann and Sterling Spann, Jr.; other family members, Kimberly, Rose and Dee Dee Mayfield; and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:00noon on Wednesday at the Chapel.
