Martha Elizabeth Grimes Holland, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born to the late Earlie H. Grimes and Mattie Allen Grimes in Winston-Salem, NC.
Martha Holland is a graduate of Atkins High School and Winston-Salem Teachers College with B. S. Degree in Education. She later earned her Master's Degree in Education from Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA. She attended summer workshops at A&T State University, Greensboro, NC, University of Georgia, Athens, GA and Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley, GA.
Martha Holland served faithfully as a teacher in the Floyd County School System, teaching at Fairview Georgia School for the Deaf and teaching in the Rome City School System. She retired in June 1980 from Anna K. Davie Elementary School after 31 years of teaching. She continued to work until November 1981 in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Mrs. Holland was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. while in Rome. In Winston-Salem, she was a volunteer at Reynolds Health Center and the Red Cross for eight years after retirement. She was an active member of Greater Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, Rome, GA and after returning to W-S united with First Waughtown Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Choir, Sunday school, Missionary Ministry and the Seniors and Retirees Ministry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Holland, owner and operator for 50 years of Holland's Barber Shop; her brother, Richard Grimes; sister, Georgiana Coltrane and step-daughter, Sarah Harkness.
Surviving is her beloved family; daughter, Aldine (Otis) Rucker; six step-children, George (Linda) Holland of Fort Valley, GA, Betty Johnson of Gardenia , CA, Bertha (Ulysses) Hillman of Orange Park, FL, Lessie Ann (Billy) Reynolds of Rome, GA, Hubert Holland, Jr. of Fayetteville, GA, and Tyrone Holland of Rome, GA; a loving sister, Dorothy (Rev. Thomas) White; grandchildren, Tamala (Eric) Boyce, Robbie Shore, and Avandre Griggs; great-grandchildren, Aziyah Barnes and Zyere Griggs; also the grand children, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren of her late husband; one niece, Gloria (Michael) Kimbrough; a nephew, Larry (Carol) Williams, and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Homegoing services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, August 2, 2010 at First Waughtown Baptist Church, 838 Moravia Street W-S NC 27107 with Reverend Dennis Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12:30 until 1:00 pm on Monday at the Church.
