Bishop Marion Vera Mobley Scales, affectionately known to her family and friends as Vera, departed this life on Monday, October 5, 2015. She was born to Otis Mobley and Mary Alice Wardard Mobley on April 20, 1945 in Chester, South Carolina.
She was the pastor of Trinity Hope Holy Church of the city. One of the highlights of her ministry was the Bishop Scales went on a Missionary trip to Haiti to pray for and minister to residents of that land.
She attended the WSFC Schools, graduated from Atkins High School, and Russell's Business College. Bishop Scales was a member of the The Mahalia Jackson Outreach Club, member of The Marian Anderson Club until it was dissolved, and a Senior Citizens Club. She retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 28 years of service.
Bishop Scales was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Darius R. Scales; a sister, Carrie Ruth Blackwell; mother-in-law, Dorena G. Scales; father-in-law, P. Thomas Scales; and 3 brothers-in-law, Earl Morrison, Tony O. Scales, and James S. Reeves.
She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted and loving husband of 45 years and caregiver, Bishop Tyrone B. Scales; son, Renzie (Tameka) Scales; four grandchildren, Lynzie, Lincoln, Luke, and Levi Scales; three sisters, Brenda Mobley Morrison, Vernell (Richard) Lewis, and Prestina (James) Gist; a brother, Gerald (Francis) Mobley; four sisters-in-law, Brenda S. Reeves, Rev. Parthenia (Robert) Galloway, Priscilla (Preston) McFarlin all of the city, and Ada B. Scales of Galax, VA; several godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, church members, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Emory Clark officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:30pm on Friday at the Chapel.
