Margretta “Cookie” Davis was born on October 16, 1943, to the late David N. Brown and the late Mary H. Nivens McCants. She departed this life on Thursday, October 15, 2026, in her home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest son, Wesley Johnson; and her sister, Mrs. Jane LeGrant.
She was a proud graduate of Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She dedicated much of her life to serving and caring for others through a long career in nursing and home health before retiring. Her life was centered around her love for family, her faith, and her church. She enjoyed the simple things that brought her happiness and was deeply cherished for her kindness, strength, compassion, and loving spirit. Margretta was a member of the following organizations: Gospel and Cathedral Choirs, Home Missions (Secretary), Quarterly Conference (Secretary), WH & OM Society, Adult Sunday School, Hospitality Committee, Lay Council, Christian Education Department, and Card Ministry.
She has left to cherish her memories; her husband of 18 years, Tommy R. Davis; one brother, David N. Brown (Gracie); son, Dana L. Johnson; one daughter, Shannon B. Shields; one son-law, Marcus E. Shields; two grandchildren, Joshua M. Shields and Desiree’ K. Shields; six nephews, David (Stephonie) LeGrant, Japhet (Shana) LeGrant, Victor (Tosha) LeGrant, Kerri (Ruth) LeGrant, David N. Brown, III, and Deleon Brown; niece, Cherita Brown; very special aunt, Delores Nivens; best friend of over 40 years, Ms. Linda Riggs; and a host of many cousins, family and friends.
Margretta adored her family and her Goler church family wholeheartedly and spoke of them often with great love and pride. Her faith, family, and the relationships she cherished were truly at the center of her life. She touched the lives of so many through her loving heart, caring spirit, and the kindness she extended to others. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the love, memories, and legacy she leaves behind will forever remain in our hearts.
We loved Margretta dearly, but God loved her so much more. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that she is now resting peacefully in His loving arms. Rest on, our Dear Queen. Your love will remain in our hearts forever.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30pm Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church. The family visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 1:30pm on Wednesday at the Church.
