Margaret Ellen Graham Landon February 28, 1922 – July 23, 2011. On Saturday, July 23, 2011, Margaret Ellen Landon peacefully transitioned. Margaret received her high school diploma from Atkins High School, and her college degree in 1956 from Winston-Salem State University. She also received a Master of Arts degree in education from NC A&T University in 1962. Margaret was a long time school teacher in the Forsyth County School System until the early 70's, and she later became a women's dormitory counselor at Winston-Salem State University. Margaret (Parham) was initially married to Walter Parham, Jr., who predeceased her due to cancer after a brief marriage; and, they had one child, Brenda, who died January, 2009. Margaret then married, Johnnie Allen Landon, Sr., the first African American police detective for the Winston-Salem Police Department, who predeceased her in September, 1988. Margaret was a long-time member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Johnnie Allen Landon, Jr. Esquire (Karen) of Washington, DC; one sister, Maxine Simmons of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren Jana Kristen Landon of DC, Kaela Margaret Landon of DC, Brandon (Victoria) Mauney, Barenda Mauney, Charlene Mauney, and Charles Mauney ; three great grandchildren; four great- great- grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
The worship service will be held at 12noon Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Serenus Churn, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Friday at the Church. An informal gathering for family and friends will be held from 7pm until 8pm on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at Russell Funeral Home.
The family wishes to sincerely thank caregivers Shirley Bohanon and Steven Hairston for the care they provided to Margaret over the past four years. The family also wishes to thank family and friends who contributed to Margaret's care, spiritual uplift, and well being over the past several years.
