IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Laeunice
Brown Mccloud
July 8, 2022
Margaret LaEunice Brown McCloud was born on November 14, 1948, in Mecklenburg County, VA, to the late Joseph Wallace Brown and Margaret Speaks Brown. She departed this life on July 8, 2022, peacefully in her sleep at home.
Virtually everyone who had the good fortune to meet Margaret would remember her. The warmth she exuded and the generosity of her spirit were things she shared freely. She always managed to make those who came into her orbit feel special. Small in stature, but large in life, Margaret possessed a singular strength of will and resolved to live life on her own terms.
Margaret graduated from Virginia State University in 1971 and held many jobs throughout her life — teacher, National Park Service ranger, office manager, and most recently, deputy director of Family Services, Inc., HeadStart. Her profession, however, was raising her children and being a caregiver to her family, especially her in-laws, the late Elaine Delahoussaye McCloud and Dr. Willard McCloud, Sr.
Nothing meant more to Margaret than her two children — Willard and Monique — to whose lives she was devoted, and whose successes she cheered. Much to their chagrin, she was always happy to share their lives with others in conversation, whether they wished to hear about it or not. And if the happenings of her children weren't enough, the real spoons that stirred Margaret's glass were the comings and goings of her grandchildren – McKenzie and Justin.
Margaret met and married her husband, Willard McCloud, Jr., or "Squawky" as he is known to family and friends, in 1970. Their life together was spent in Washington, DC; Nashville, TN; Tuskegee, AL; Newport News, VA; and they resided in Winston-Salem, NC, for over thirty years. Throughout her life, Margaret was active with numerous organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Moles in Winston-Salem, and The Links in Hampton, VA.
In addition to the loved ones mentioned above, Margaret is survived by a son in-law, Kwame J. Manley; an older sister, two brothers and three sisters-in-law: Lola Irene Brown of Lacrosse, VA; Wayne Brown (Betty) of Milton, MA.; Wallace Brown (Nita) of Teaneck, NJ; and Ramona Brown of Silver Springs, MD; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and life-long friends. Her brother, Curtis Brown predeceased her.
In lieu of a traditional funeral service, Margaret's life will be celebrated later with family and friends. The McCloud family wishes to thank all who have called, stopped by, and reached out to express their love and appreciation for Margaret.
