Obituary

Mamie Rutledge Lawrence, 91, peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at her home surrounded by loved ones after a brief period of illness. Mamie was born December 7, 1934 to the late Eva Dale Rutledge in Lancaster, South Carolina.

Mamie was raised and educated in Winston-Salem where she graduated from the historic Atkins High School. Mamie furthered her education by attending and graduating from Winston-Salem Teachers College (Winston-Salem State University) with a bachelors degree in Elementary Education. After graduation, Mamie taught in pubic schools in Danville, Virginia and Internationally in the Philippines.

Mamie married the late Master Sergeant Willie D. Lawrence for a union of more than 62 years. From this union, they raised two children, Wesley D. Lawrence (deceased), and Wistel D. Lawrence of the home. Mamie faithfully supported Willie in his Air Force career traveling across the world to bases in Libya, The Philippines, Warner Robins, Georgia, Spain, Arizona, California, and North Carolina.

Mamie attended Alpha and Omega Church of Faith in Winston-Salem where she was loved and

surrounded by all members and fondly referred to as “Mother Mamie”.

Mamie was preceded in death by her husband, Willie D. Lawrence; her son, Wesley D. Lawrence; her mother, Eva Dale Rutledge; her brothers, Alphonso Rutledge and Norris Rutledge; and her sisters, Barbara Rutledge and Deloris Rutledge Huntley.

Mamie leaves to cherish her memory her beloved daughter, Wistel D. Lawrence; and a host of

nieces and nephews, relatives, friends, church family, and neighbors. She maintained a lifelong

friendship with her best friend, Ida Cathy of Winston-Salem.
