Mrs. Madgeline "Madge" King Scales was born in Winston-Salem, NC on December 31, 1925, to the late Allen and Esther King. She departed this life on January 4, 2015, at Springwood Care Center.
Madge was a special grandmother ("mother") to six grandchildren born to her son and daughter-in-law, the late Norwood King Sr. and the late Jessie Mae Cornelius King. Madge kept her promise to Jessie Mae, which was to take care of her children while on her death bed with Leukemia in 1973. Madge knew she had to be obedient to the Lord's will and do what was right. She knew that she had a job ahead of her to raise four girls and two boys. For this reason, she retired from her job at Winston Steam Laundry during the mid 1970's, to make sure the children were properly taken care of each day. She often went without to make sure the children had what they needed and wanted. Some would say that she was strict, but the children would say she did what she had to do to protect and honor the wishes of their mother.
Madge met and exceeded the wishes of her daughter-in-law. All six children went to the Winston-Salem, Forsyth Co. Schools, some of them college and graduate school. Over the years the children repaid their grandmother dearly. Especially Patricia, Madge resided in her home for many years and she was devoted to taking care of her daily. The grandchildren made sure that all of their grandmother's needs and wants were met and she wanted for nothing.
In 2010 Madge had a stroke that left her unable to walk and move one side of her body. A temporary visit for rehabilitation to Springwood Care Center became home. While at Springwood Madge became independent, she wheeled her wheel chair to the dining room to meet up with her friends for dinner and during the week she would be seen wheeling her way to Bingo or to get her hair done a at the Salon. During her time at Springwood Madge had her ups and downs with her health but she always had a strong will to bounce back. Most of the caregivers and staff called her "mama" and looked forward to chatting with her each day. Madge's smile would brighten ones day.
On January 4, 2015, Madge knew her purpose for life was done. She made sure that all were able to release her even though they would miss her dearly. She was ready to move on and meet up with her family and friends in heaven.
In addition to her parents, son, and daughter-in-law, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Vestal Scales; and her sister, Dorothy King Rawls.
She leaves to cherish loving memories her six grandchildren- four daughters, Barbara King Hynes (Samuel) of W-S, NC, Norene King Pinkney (Kermit) of Mebane, NC, Patricia King and Melinda King Williams (Braxton G.) both of Kernersville, NC; two sons, Norwood King Jr. of W-S, NC and Neno King of Thomasville, NC; one niece, Inez King of St. Albans, NY; one devoted cousin, Gwen Hedman of Glen Carben, IL; 15 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She will truly be missed.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1pm on Saturday at the Chapel.
