Lillie Mae Walters was born December 7, 1923, the second child of the late Walter and Alberta Walters in Danville, Virginia. She relocated to Winston-Salem at an early age. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center on March 8, 2023.
Ms. Walters worked for ESR. She was educated at Carver High School. She also attended Forsyth Tech Community College where she received her credentials in Early Childhood Development.
Ms. Walters had a lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. One of the highlights of her career was when she had the opportunity to teach one of her sons at Carver Crest Elementary School. She also worked at Wilson Street, Kimberly Park, Cleveland Ave, Happy Hill Gardens, and 14th Street Recreation Centers, where she met and mentored many children. On many occasions at Ms. Walters home, you could find her students eating dinner & spending the weekend with her and her family. She also worked for Northwest Child Development and the Little Red School House. During her later years at the daycare, she was blessed to teach the children of the students that she taught at the recreation centers in previous years. At the age of 85 years young, she became bored sitting at home and went to the Urban League and was hired to work at First Baptist Church Daycare Downtown Winston-Salem. One of the teachers at the Daycare was a student of Ms. Walters years earlier when she was a child. Ms. Walters worked there until the age of 90 years young.
Ms. Walters loved celebrating the Lord and her family. She also enjoyed traveling, ceramics, cooking and doing her Word Hunt puzzles. She loved family gatherings, and her sweet potato cobbler was the best. She was very comical and would make you laugh with her old school remarks. She could hold a conversation with anyone and had a strong love for children. She was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church where she joined in 1968. She attended church faithfully every Sunday with her 6 children. She loved the UBC church mass choir where she joined during the first discovery Sunday under the leadership of Bishop Sir Walter Mack Jr. She was the oldest member on the choir at the age of 99 years young. She was also a member of the Salt Ministry, The Missionary Circle, The Camel City Elk Lodge, and the American Legion Post 453.
She was preceded in death by her 4 brothers, Walter Walters Jr., Edward Walters, Robert Walters, and James Walters; and 2 sisters, Mary Walters and Helen Walters.
She leaves to cherish her beautiful and precious memories two daughters, Gail (Larry) Wilson and Jennifer (Leon) Evans; four sons, Charles Walters, Robert Cinque Walters, Earnest Walters, and Emmanuel (Pegi) Walters all the city; her devoted sisters, Edna McDonald and Elizabeth Brooks of Detroit, Michigan; one brother, Joe L.
