Obituary

Mrs. Lillie Mae King Pitts was born April 7, 1928 to Elizabeth King and David Johnson in Beaufort, South Carolina. Early on the morning of Sunday, April 24, 2022, at age 94, she was called from her earthly home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to her heavenly home.

Lillie Mae Pitts was united in matrimony to Benjamin James Pitts on October 13, 1955 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where they made their home and reared their children. At the time of his passing on December 13, 2021, they had been married for 67 years. To this union two sons were born: Benjamin James Pitts, Jr. and Marvin Pitts.

Mrs. Pitts was a loving and devoted mother, not only to her sons but also to other relatives. She especially enjoyed going to her son Ben's Friday night high school football games. Mrs. Pitts loved music and cooking. She was a wonderful cook and prepared sumptuous meals for her family until her health began to decline. She also cherished spending time with her grandsons and their children. Until she was no longer physically able to do so, Mrs. Pitts made it a priority to attend family, church, and community events, where she always had a good time and gave others a reason to smile and laugh. She was always prepared to make impromptu remarks about whomever was being celebrated. Her infectious charm, wit, humor, and wisdom will always be remembered. Mrs. Pitts was regarded as a true woman of God, always instilling motherly advice and wisdom in those she met and knew. She truly had a kind heart and a loving spirit.

Mrs. Pitts was a faithful, dutiful, and active member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church for several decades. For her service and dedication, she was honored with the distinction "Mother of the Church," a title she wore proudly.

Left to cherish her beautiful and lasting legacy are her two sons, Benjamin J. Pitts, Jr. and Marvin Pitts, both of Winston-Salem, NC; four grandsons, Mario Pitts of Winston-Salem, NC, Jermaine Pitts, Sr. (Holly) of Kernersville, NC, Jamar Pitts of Columbia, SC, and Antonio Pitts of Winston-Salem, NC; several great-grandchildren; nieces, LeeAnn Webb, Cheryl Webb, and Coretta Webb; nephews, Lee Webb, Jr., William Webb, and David Webb; former daughter-in-law, Shyrell Pitts of Columbia, SC; extended family and a host of friends.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, May 14, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
