Obituary

Lillie Zelma Peebles was born May 11, 1973; the daughter of Mattie and Jerry V. Peebles (Raleigh, NC).

She attended the local schools in Winston-Salem, NC. Lillie was a member of the Girl Scouts for over ten years and received the Silver Award, the second highest award in Girl Scouting. To earn this award she planned a career introduction fair for underprivileged children in the Triad area, where they were able to meet African-American doctors, lawyers, teachers, veterinarians, and other professionals.

Lillie graduated with honors from Carver High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she was a member of the Dean's List, National Honor Society and a North Carolina Scholar. She was also a member of the Flag Team, drama club, school orchestra, tri-school orchestra, gospel choir and the Winston-Salem Youth Symphony. Lillie also participated in "Fashionetta," sponsored by the Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She won the talent competitions with her violin solo and was named Miss Congeniality.

A recipient of the Carver High School Alumni Scholarship, Centennial Scholarship, a full academic scholarship, Lillie matriculated at Winston-Salem State University. She was a member of the Dean's List and a Departmental Honor Student. In addition, she was the freshman representative for the WSSU Choir, Service Coordinator for the Wesley Foundation, a member of the Homecoming Court as Miss Wesley Foundation, and secretary for the International Student Association. She was also a member of Americorp, where she tutored students in after-school and summer programs in math, science, and home economics.

While attending Winston-Salem State University, Lillie joined her mother and aunts in sisterhood and was initiated into the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. on March 28, 1993. With her grandfather as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., she became the third generation of her family to join an organization in the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
As a member of Gamma Lambda Chapter, Lillie served as Membership Committee chairman, Nominating Committee chairman, and Membership Committee assistant chairman. She was also a representative for the Tri-School Council on Hazing and participated in the school's Pan-Hellenic Council.

After graduating from Winston-Salem State University in 1995 with a BA degree in Political Science, Lillie enrolled at North Carolina Central University School of Law, where she was a member of the Dean's List, class officer, and research assistant. In 1998, she received her Juris Doctorate and fulfilled her lifelong ambition of becoming an attorney.

Lillie was admitted as a member of the North Carolina Bar Association the same year. Initially, she was employed as an attorney with the law offices of Browne, Flebotte, Wilson, and Horne in Durham, NC but ambitiously advanced her career as an attorney for the State of North Carolina. She served within several departments, most recently in the Department of Health and Human Services.

With a heart for community service, Lillie remained an active and dedicated member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She joined the East Wake Ivy Club in Knightdale, North Carolina in April 2003 and contributed to the chartering ceremony of Chi Rho Omega Chapter. A committed chapter member, she served in many capacities, including chapter hostess, Social Committee chairman, Standards Committee chairman, co-chairman of the Joint Founders' Day Committee, chapter attorney, and representative for the Wake/Raleigh Pan-Hellenic Council. She was also the recipient of Chi Rho Omega's 2006 Leadership Award and 2009 Outstanding Committee Chairman Award. Seeing a need to expand Kappa Alpha's service in the Triangle, Lillie became a member of the Pearls in Partnership with North Raleigh and Franklin County Interest Group in 2014.
