Obituary

Lillie Bell Earles Scruggs was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina on April 28, 1923 to the late Benjamin Doc Earles and Nannie Smith Earles.  She was the oldest of twin girls (Nina Bell).  She and her twin Nina Bell were the youngest of twelve siblings.  They were affectionately known as Chunk and Splinter, respectively, in their early childhood. At an early age she accepted Christ and joined Ridgeville Baptist Church in Boiling Springs, SC.

Although she had only a grade school education, she had a strong work ethic that served her well throughout her life.  She did domestic work for over 50 years.  She also had a part-time job cleaning offices at the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development for approximately 20 years where she became supervisor of the executive offices.

She had a strong belief in family relationships. She spent many years traveling up and down I-85 to care for her siblings whenever and however she could.  She also had local (Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) sisters that she would care for or assist in their care. She did not limit herself to family members only.  Many times she would offer help to friends and neighbors.  One of her favorite things to do was to "slide a child a dollar (one)".

She moved to Washington D.C. in the early 1940s.  Shortly after arriving in D.C., she married Jay B. Scruggs Sr. They remained married until his death in 1987.  She eventually moved to Pfafftown, NC in 2006.  Here she called home until God called her to her eternal home.

On Sunday, October 13, 2019, she answered the call and finished her race.  Preceding her in death was her daughter Edna Mae McCollum (Robert Lee).  Left the cherish her life are her son Jay B. Scruggs Jr.; grandchildren Ret. Major Byron Dewayne McCollum (Joyce) of Goodyear, AZ, Robin Renee Walls of Greensboro, NC, Anthony Jay Sims of Norfolk, VA, and Jay B. Scruggs III (India) of Waldorf, MD; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a host of loving nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
