Rev. Lewis Russell Crawford entered this world on June 20, 1940, the youngest son of Johnny and Wyvetra Shuford Crawford and later the son of Stewart Carter. He departed this world October 2, 2008. A native of Winston-Salem, he was a 1958 graduate of Atkins High School. He was employed by and retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company-Archer Division. Upon accepting his call to the ministry, he received his religious training from Winston-Salem Bible College. His pastoral ministries included First Baptist Church in Badin, N.C., Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Pinnacle, N.C., Messiah Baptist Church in Pilot Mountain, N.C. and interim pastor and associate minister at Mars Hill Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.
As a servant leader, he was the Assistant Organizational Leader of The March for Jesus; Past Master and Chaplain of Red Rock Masonic Lodge, No. 809 PHA; vice president of The Baptist Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem; and a member of The Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity.
Preceding him in death were his fathers Johnny Crawford and Stewart Carter; and sisters, Mary Carter Strickland and Dorothy Crawford Price. Cherishing his memory are his wife, Evangelist Arnstine Rice Crawford; mother, Wyvetra S. Carter; children, Felicia Cuthrell, Cynthia Crawford, Lewis R. Crawford, Jr., Wyvetra Crawford, Tony (Dersereta) Sanders of the city, and Nerrissa Dudley of Park Forest. IL; grandchildren, Michael Crawford, D'Andre Cuthrell, Brittany Coleman, Tony Sanders Jr., Nerrissa Crawford and Nykayla Sanders; siblings, Johnny (Gloria) Crawford and Nora Brooks, both of Baltimore, MD; aunt, Dorothy S. Johnson; devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
Homegoing services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, October 6, at Mars Hill Baptist, 1331 E. 4th Street with Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from Noon until 1:00pm at the Church. The family can be contacted at the home, 1370 Argonne Blvd.
