Mrs. Leola Mims Johnson, 92, went home to be with our Heavenly Father after passing away at her home on Friday, February 12, 2021 in Winston-Salem, NC. She was the last living of 13 siblings. She was born March 20, 1928 to the late Ola and Hamp Mims. She was the widow of the late Nathaniel Johnson. Leola was a native of Swansea, South Carolina and was a resident of Winston-Salem, NC since 1938.
She joined Mount Olive Baptist Church of Winston-Salem where until her senior years, she was an avid member and participant in her church as a missionary, usher, and nurses board member. Though she never graduated high school, she was her own business owner, working as a domestic worker for many years.
Leola was preceded in death by her parents, Ola and Hamp Mims, Sr.; husband, Nathaniel Johnson; son, Robert L. Mims, Sr.; and her siblings, Sally, Jessie, Oree, Ruby, Gerline, Willie Mae, Otto, Sr., Raymond, Hamp, Jr., Sylvester, and Burlee.
Leola is survived by her loving and devoted daughter of the home, Vivian Marie Johnson; beloved children, Eddie (Wendy) L. Mims, Sr. and Barbara A. Scales; eight grandchildren, Tanya, Robert, Jr., Tony, Edwina, Evelyn, Eddie, Jr., Charles, and Marcus; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:0pm Monday, February 22, 2021 at Russell Funeral Home. Private services will be held Tuesday, February 23, 2021.
