Mrs. Lenora "Pie" Lee Alston departed this life at her home on January 15, 2010. She was born on June 26, 1944 in Rembert, SC to Woodrow Augustus Lee and Sarah Vaughan.
She was baptized at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC where she served as a Sunday School teacher, usher, and missionary. As a child she attended Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Rembert, SC.
Mrs. Alston obtained her education in the public schools of Sumter County, SC and upon graduation from Ebenezer High School she was voted "Miss Ebenezer." After moving to Winston-Salem and while working full-time and raising a family, she attended Russell Business School and Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem. She was a former employee of Hanes Hosiery, Inc. and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company before becoming a successful entrepreneur as a grocery and convenience store operator and real estate investor. As an avid gardener, she shared the bounty of her gardens with friends and family.
Mrs. Alston was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Miriam Alston; and a grandson, Shavayae Daniels.
She leaves to cherish her marvelous memory and rejoice in her life: her husband, Charlie Alston; daughter, Sara Alston, Esq.; sons, Charles and Creig Alston; sisters, Mary L. Alston(late Jesse), Rembert, SC; Bobbie Rucker(Lawrence), Winston-Salem, NC; Joe Ann Johnson (William), Camden, SC; uncle, Thomas Vaughan, Winter Park, FL; aunt, Alma Vaughan, Philadelphia, PA and several loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and other relatives and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held at 12:30 pm Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, 575 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, with Dr. Nathan Scovens officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:30pm on Wednesday at the church. The funeral procession will assemble and leave from her home at 3959 Leinbach Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
