Mrs. Lena Belle Thomas Crowder was born April 4, 1931, to the late Henry Lee Thomas and Janie Woods Thomas. She departed this earthly life on September 29, 2014.
She was a life-long member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sunday School, Adult Class #6. She also was a Financial Secretary for the Sunday School Department. Financially and Spiritually, she supported her mother' Ruth Missionary Group. She was also a reporter for the church's newspaper, The Oraculum.
Her educational experiences included Kimberly Park Elementary School, Gillespie-Selden Institute (a private co-educational High School) in Cordele, Georgia. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Winston-Salem State University, and a Masters degree from A. and T. State University. She taught "her precious children" forty years.
Her community involvement included National Women, Winston-Salem Chapter; the Friends of Flonnie Anderson Theatrical Association (FATA); The Thomas-Anderson Day Care Center; and voter registration Poll Worker in Winston-Salem. She also was the Recording Secretary for the Winston-Salem Chapter and the Southeast Region of National Women of Achievement.
She received many awards such as Teacher of the Year, NWOA Achievement Awards Achievement Awards and numerous Who's Who in Biographical Records for her contributions to education and personalities in the South.
Survivors include her dedicated daughter, Rayonette Janease Crowder; two sisters, Flonnie T. Anderson (Rudy Sr.) and Jeannette T. Lewis; three nephews, Albert R. Anderson Jr., Roscoe Mica Anderson and Edward Ashley Lewis; one niece, Deirdre Y. Anderson; special cousins Chetney Brown and Clifton Brown (Delores) and their son and daughter, Alexander and Ashley; four God-daughters, Lolita Douthit-Higgins, Aminah Faal Sonko, Donna Hargrave and Katrice Finney; one God-son, Eric Johnson; the Perry Family and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Saturday at the Church.
